Since summer has thrust haze on us in full force- it’s time to reminisce and remember what a beautiful Singapore summer was actually like. Remembering a less smoggy and more….sunny time is hard to do, given that the island is now suffering under a wave of disgustingly smokey matter that Singaporeans can’t seem to stop talking about.
To try and take all of our minds off of the PSI readings, we need to turn to the ultimate creative escape: MUSIC! For todays music diary we’ve shortlisted the 10 best summer songs to put you in that summer-y mood to prepare you for when the haze (hopefully) clears and you can hit up Sentosa with your picnic basket and JBL speakers.
1. Here’s To Never Growing Up – Avril Lavigne
Avril Lavigne’s punk/pop princess charm will win you over, with this catchy summer tune urging you to hang out with your friends and make the most of life! Hit the beach, take a nightclub by storm and vow to never grow up with Canada’s favorite eternal teenager.
2. Good Time – Owl City feat. Carly Rae Jepsen
The rousing chorus of this infectious poppy tune will make you want to dance and sing all day long. A perfect summer song to jam to while on a road trip with friends. Perhaps leaving the country for a vacation may be the best thing to do right now, and this song will definitely enhance the fun you’re sure to have while away.
3. Drive By – Train
Train really nails it with “Drive By” an infectious hook makes it impossible to dislike, or resist wanting to grab a ukulele to rock out with- featuring the ever energetic Pat Monahan. The music video is very aptly set in sunny California, everyones dream summer getaway. Put your headphones in and let the music transport you to another place on earth.
4. Anna Sun – Walk The Moon
Although relatively unknown, this has to be one of the best summer songs of all time. It’s one of those rip off all of your clothes and jump into a pool with your everlasting best friends, forever frozen in that one infinite moment. This song successfully manages to capture the frivolity of your earliest (and most treasured) summer memories.
5. 22 – Taylor Swift
This is the perfect song to play while getting ready with your friends for the biggest pool party of your summer. Dancing around your room in PJ’s and hipster glasses is highly recommended for this song. Oh, and don’t forget to shake what your momma gave ya during the heavy hitting dub step influenced chorus.
6. Cruise – Florida Georgia Line
Florida Georgia Line are a fresh new band, and have really hit the ground running with their first single. A chorus that makes even the most uptight of neurotics want to run away with the person they love the most really makes the song the big hit that it is. The country infused aspect makes it different to any other mainstream song on the radio right now- a must listen!
7. Die Young – Kesha
OF COURSE, Kesha had to be included on this play list. The original queen of partying (and glitter throwing) instructs us to “make the most of the night/like we’re gonna die young” and live in the present instead of worrying about the future or regretting the past. So listen to what the leader of the “Animals” says and make the most of your summer, like it’s the last one you’ll ever have.
8. Here Comes The Sun – The Beatles
Classic pop group “The Beatles” urges you to take it easy, because the sun is here and it’s ready to calm you down. This is a great song to put on your suntanning mix, where all you need to do is be happy and let the sun work its magic on you as you listen to your most relaxing (and uplifting) tunes.
9. Really Don’t Care – Demi Lovato feat. Cher Lloyd
This is the perfect song to play right in the middle of a party, to get all the girls who’ve recently been scorned by exes jumping around excitedly on your patio feeling great for the first time in months. This sudden burst of energy and thrill will definitely liven up your summer bash.
10. We Can’t Stop – Miley Cyrus
Miley soothes your soul and lets you “forget the haters” because “somebody loves you” and you should definitely take her advice, unwind and pour yourself a drink while listening to this calming but catchy post crazy party summer song.
